Twenty-five
minutes east of Butte, Montana,
Sage Mountain Center sits at 6,400 feet surrounded by the peaks of the Rocky
Mountains. As a retreat and education center, SMC is dedicated "to promoting
deeper awareness of self and the environment." For the last nine years, photovoltaic
panels have supplied 100 percent of SMC’s electricity needs while passive solar
design and solar thermal applications have supplied 90 percent of its heating
and hot water. SMC's sustainable living programs include year-around workshops
in solar electricity, solar living and sustainable building, straw-bale and cordwood
construction, and more.
 Founders
Christopher Borton and Linda Welsh, have created a state-of-the-art learning center,
bringing into harmony low-tech and high-tech living. Tours, field trips, and private
classes are available year around. SMC also takes selected seminars "on the
